72&Sunny Around the World

It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas, right? I have been trying to justify this to myself as I procrastinate, thinking about what to be for Halloween. Instead, I found myself perusing the internet and brainstorming what would make great Christmas presents for my family. Apparently, it is not just me, and retailers are taking advantage of the extended holiday shopping period that COVID has generated. The advising agency, 72andSunny, helped Etsy create a heartwarming series, true to the times’ commercials showcasing how the platform can connect people to artists to craft unique and thoughtful gifts perfect for this strange holiday season.

Specializing in marketing, advertising, and design, 72andSunny works with some of the most iconic brands and businesses to expand creativity and create connections with consumers.

The agency has offices in Amsterdam, New York, Singapore, Sydney, and Los Angeles. The LA headquarters are housed just down the bluff in Playa Vista. Founded 16 years ago in 2004, 72andSunny has made a name for themselves as one of the world’s top-ranking agencies. They were named “Agency of the Year” for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014 by Advertising Age and Adweek.

“We believe that unignorable creativity is the most powerful force of business in an attention economy.”

Looking through the company’s Instagram page, I saw that they were the agency behind many ad campaigns that I’ve seen recently – and have been impressed by. They have continuously worked with Audi, Google, Coca-Cola, Adobe, the NFL, Instagram, Adidas, and too many more major companies to list. I loved seeing how ads from the different offices of 72&Sunny looked and felt. A spot for Fanta that came from the Amsterdam office compared to one for Adobe Photoshop from Los Angeles. Both were wildly creative and visually stunning, and you could definitely feel how they were catered to different cultures.

In 2016, 72andSunny adopted the mission “to expand and diversify the creative class.” This mission was put in place to recognize their workforce’s demographics and the lack of representation within it. It also served as a motivation and call to diversify their company culture to create better work and, in turn, a better world.

They revisited this mission in June of this year as the Black Lives Matter movement grew in response to police brutality and injustice within the United States. 72andSunny takes ownership of the progress and the setbacks that they have experienced over the four years with their mission. They published data of employees’ different races and ethnicities holding critical roles in their North American offices on their website.

I find it very interesting that there is not readily available data regarding the different races and ethnicities of employees for most companies. In an industry that revolves around reaching the widest audiences and making the most substantial impacts, it could only be more useful for a company to have a diverse employee base. Aside from the competitive advantage that results from a diverse workforce, it creates an inclusive and representational environment and has hope for a future that provides equal opportunities for people of color in America.

A glimpse of the 72&Sunny Instagram Page – which I happily noticed is already followed by the M-School account.
